Dhunsi ist norwegisch-indisch, doch im Norwegischen gibt es kein Wort f\u00fcr \u201emixed\u201c. Anstatt diese L\u00fccke einfach nur zu erkl\u00e4ren, nutzt er sie zur Erlaubnis, fortw\u00e4hrend die Mittel zu wechseln: Mythos, inszenierte Modefotografie, Dokumentation, Archiv. Jedes wird zu einem weiteren Versuch, ein Wort zu finden f\u00fcr etwas, das seine eigene Sprache nicht kennt.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Gerade diese Weigerung, sich festzulegen, ist das eigentliche Thema des Buches. Die ersten Bilder sind desorientierend und fremdartig. Sie ersch\u00fcttern jedes Vertrauen in das Gesehene, bevor die Erz\u00e4hlung \u00fcberhaupt richtig begonnen hat. Von dort aus bewegt sich Dhunsi durch die Kunstfotografie in eine modische Bildsprache, unterbricht sie mit Text und taucht dann in einen w\u00e4rmeren, dokumentarischen Ton ein. Natur trifft auf verzerrte analoge Bilder, als k\u00f6nne kein einzelnes Genre fassen, wonach er sucht. Es folgen ges\u00e4ttigte, theatralische Selbstportr\u00e4ts, in denen Dhunsi sich nicht nur mit indischer Folklore besch\u00e4ftigt, sondern sich in sie hineinstellt. Identit\u00e4t wird hier nicht dokumentiert, sondern performativ hervorgebracht. Dann erscheinen, wie ich sie nennen w\u00fcrde, \u201edie Geister\u201c: eine magische, offene Bildsprache, die mit der Kraft der Natur spielt. Die Figuren scheinen in einem Vakuum platziert und f\u00fchren zur\u00fcck zu jener au\u00dferweltlichen Verunsicherung, mit der das Buch begann.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Darauf folgt eine klarere, direkte dokumentarische Sequenz, anschlie\u00dfend bearbeitete und angeeignete Archivfotografien. Begleitet werden sie von Randnotizen auf den leeren Seiten, wie Regieanweisungen, die die emotionale Wirkung des stillen Zusammenspiels von Ton und Bild verst\u00e4rken. Das Archiv schlie\u00dft mit \u201eDNA \u2013 Do Not Ask\u201c, einem Titel, der weniger wie Information klingt als wie die Verweigerung davon.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Danach f\u00fchrt das Buch seine fr\u00fcheren Bildsprachen wieder zusammen: Alltag, Freundschaft und \u2013 zum ersten Mal ausdr\u00fccklich \u2013 ein Ort, Oslo. Schlie\u00dflich kehren die Geister ein letztes Mal zur\u00fcck. Als l\u00f6se sich die Suche nach einer greifbaren Identit\u00e4t ins Nichts auf und z\u00f6ge uns wieder in Dhunsis Labyrinth hinein. Einen Ausgang gibt es nicht, nur den Weg weiter hinein, tiefer in die Bedeutung von \u201emixed\u201c.<\/p>

Auch materiell spielt Mixed<\/em> sein eigenes Spiel mit dem Vermischten. Das Buch ist klein, fast tagebuchartig, etwas, das man mit einer Hand h\u00e4lt und das dadurch intim wirkt. Zugleich ist das Papier dick und gl\u00e4nzend, eher wie beim Bl\u00e4ttern in einem alten Modemagazin als beim Lesen eines Tagebuchs. Dieses gl\u00e4nzende, leicht schwere Papier verleiht ihm Gewicht und macht es zu einem popkulturellen Objekt, nicht zu etwas, das nur f\u00fcr den eigenen Schreibtisch gedacht ist. Diese Verbindung aus klein und pers\u00f6nlich, aber wie ein Magazin produziert, geh\u00f6rt zu derselben Idee, die das ganze Buch durchzieht: zwei Dinge zusammenzuf\u00fchren, die eigentlich nicht nebeneinanderpassen, und sie dennoch funktionieren zu lassen.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mixed<\/em> ist der Beweis daf\u00fcr, dass Bilder nicht gleich aussehen m\u00fcssen, um in einem Buch zusammenzugeh\u00f6ren. Dhunsi, ein Mixed-Media-K\u00fcnstler, so bezeichnet ihn zumindest seine Bio und das lie\u00df mich schmunzeln, bewegt sich zwischen Kunstfotografie, Mode, Dokumentation, inszeniertem Portr\u00e4t und Archiv, ohne dass das Buch je seinen roten Faden verliert. Jeder Wechsel des Genres wirkt wie ein bewusster Zug innerhalb der Erz\u00e4hlung, nicht wie ein Bruch mit ihr.<\/p>

Die Struktur besitzt etwas ausgesprochen Theatralisches. Sie inszeniert eine Identit\u00e4t durch viele visuelle Stimmen und l\u00e4sst sie \u00fcberzeugend nebeneinander bestehen. Dhunsis Arbeit erinnert eindringlich daran, dass ein Fotobuch formale Vielfalt tragen und dennoch erz\u00e4hlerisch vollkommen stimmig sein kann.
